Secret Beach in Monterey: Zmudowski State Beach
Zmudowski State Beach in Monterey is an exposed beach break that has reliable surf and can work at any time of the year. Ground swells are more frequent than wind swells and the optimum swell angle is from the west. Waves at the beach break both left and right. The quality of the surf isn’t affected by the tide. Even when there are waves, it’s not likely to be crowded. Beware of rips and sharks though!
The beach is a popular fishing area, featuring perch, kingfish, sole, flounder, halibut, Boccaccio, jacksmelt, lingcod, Cabazon, salmon, steelhead and occasional rockfish.
The beach features the Pajaro River estuary, where a natural preserve has been set aside. The sandy beach is also popular with bird watchers and equestrians. Horses are only allowed near the waterline. Swimming and water sports are hazardous because of strong rip-currents.
